Maintenance, equipment, and insurance also cost money. For example, a pedal harp has between 40 to 47 strings. Those strings are the voice of the instrument and need regular replacement.

I remember performing for a December wedding at the Courthouse Sunken Gardens. It had been pouring rain all morning, and by the time I arrived, the rain had subsided — but the lawns were completely soaked and muddy. There was an umbrella for me, but as the rain started up again, I knew it wasn't going to be enough to protect me and my harp. I was incredibly lucky that day: the DJ miking the ceremony kindly offered to share his tent on the grass. It was an absolute miracle — the guests all had small white umbrellas, and the ceremony was a success. Needless to say, I spent hours afterward scrubbing mud off my shoes and my harp transport covers.

• Established Professionals: $300 – $500+ per hour

Most harpists require a one-to two-hour minimum booking, regardless of how long the music is actually needed. For example, I have a one-hour minimum — so if I'm booked to play for a 30-minute ceremony, the fee is the same as for a full hour, $500. This minimum covers a harpist's basic time, travel, and preparation, since the work involved in showing up for a 30-minute gig isn't meaningfully less than for an hour-long one.

Rates also vary by region: harpists in major metropolitan areas and high-cost regions (like the Northeast and Pacific coast) tend to charge more than those in smaller cities or rural areas. Experience, reputation, and demand play a major role too — harpists with an established client base and strong reviews can often command premium rates even within the same market.
